Where Happy Valley’s Youngest Learners Get Their Start

A formal early childhood school, built through partnership, serving children who deserve every opportunity to thrive.

Our story

From vision to opportunity

In the heart of Happy Valley, Blue Downs, sits a preschool that exists because a community refused to let circumstance decide a child’s future.

Sing for Africa Preschool is a formal Early Childhood Development (ECD) school for children aged two to five. It was founded on Ms. Marietjie Paxton’s vision: that education creates opportunity, and that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. Today, that vision is carried forward by a team determined not only to honour it, but to push it further, with ambitions to introduce technology-focused learning and position the centre as a leader in early childhood education.

The Blackheath City Improvement District is proud to be part of that story.

Built Through Partnership

Before there was a formal school, there were informal ones. BCID built and ran several within the Happy Valley community, working hand in hand with local leaders and educators who understood what their neighbourhood needed.

That groundwork led to something lasting. In partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Social Development Directorate, BCID helped construct a formal ECD facility, and a years-long partnership with Sing for Africa NPC turned a building into a thriving school readiness programme for the children of Happy Valley.

It’s a model for what’s possible when local knowledge, public support, and committed people pull in the same direction.

A Foundation For Life

Every day at Sing for Africa is built around development, not just supervision. Through drawing, tracing, cutting, sticking, puzzles, and shape recognition, children build the fine motor skills, concentration, and coordination that future learning depends on.

The educators work closely with the developmental expectations of local primary schools, so children don’t just attend, they arrive at Grade 1 ready.

From the educators in the classroom to the kitchen staff who make sure no child goes hungry, every team member plays a part in creating a safe, nurturing environment where children grow socially, emotionally, and academically under one roof.
